Hardscape / Landscape in Mesa, AZ
How the job started, what our in-house crew built, and how it turned out.
01Site & challenge
The backyard of this Mesa, Arizona home was bare dirt behind a new block wall, with a covered patio that looked out on nothing. Desert yards have to look finished while shedding heat and saving water, which rules out a lawn and puts the pressure on grading: every square foot has to drain away from the house and the wall, and the paver base has to stay put through monsoon downpours. The owners wanted a patio to sit on, a spot of green for the kids, and nothing that needs mowing.
02What we built
Our crew excavated and graded the yard for drainage, then placed and compacted road-base for the paver patio and walkway off the covered patio. Sand-set pavers were laid with a soldier-course border, cut to fit, and compacted to a finished surface. Across the rest of the yard we rolled out fabric weed barrier and spread decorative rock ground cover for a low-water landscape that reads clean against the block wall and palms. A crisp, level inset of artificial turf gives the family a usable green space without irrigation. The whole install ties into the new wall so the yard reads as one design, under our pavers and concrete service and Arizona ROC license.
03Outcome
The result is a low-maintenance, low-water Mesa backyard that holds up in the heat — patio, rock, turf, and wall finished by one crew, permitted through the City of Mesa and Maricopa County.
